First Blossom

Soot and Soul. The Hemlock Suite. Detail

"I made my first blossom. I scar the laminate with the levigator, rub ink into the grooves, and against this intaglio backdrop of a damaged, tortured ground, I bring a flower to life – manière noire. Joy. Some cheesecloth, the pressure of a finger, the scrape of a scriber, of a fingernail, and there it is: as if my stones metamorphosed into the blooming umbels of hemlock. They are so easy to do, they have the floating, billowing shape indigenous to my world, and yet, it took so long to make a stone burst into bloom."
