"My first lotus leaf sticks out above the fish bowl. It is fragile, the size of a quarter. The leaf is invisible at first, just a slight thickening of the stem. Then, it pivots, and like a Chinese scroll, it slowly unfurls to both sides from the center and forms a thin round disk.
We look for miracles, but here it is – so gentle and ingenious. How long did it take to evolve this way, and then, to learn how to shed the dirt and muck of the pond.
Darwin should have lived a thousand more years."
